Suggestions for Parents With an ADHD Child

Accept your ADHD child as he or she is. He is bright, alert and desires to do well. He is and individual of worth. let him know it

  • Make life predictable each day for your child. Structure or plan so that he can make predictions for himself.

  • Be consistent with discipline, demands and daily routines.

  • Assist professionals in attempting to help your child be independent.

  • Do not let your ADHD child manipulate the entire environment of the home.

  • Behavior...The child can dominate the entire family routine with inappropriate behavior.

  • Homework...Is he using this as a tool to control his environment?

  • Remove pressures to achieve. Be aware of the differences between pressure and support. You CAN be supportive without pressuring.

  • Do not make long-range threats. Punishment needs to be immediate to the act. Depriving of TV for six weeks can only lead to further frustrations.

  • Present a united front to your child. Father and mother as well as parents and teachers.

  • Do not bug him about school. If he is had a good day, you will soon know it; if not, he does not want to talk about it anyway.

  • Do not compare children within the home or the classroom. Each has the right to be themselves.

  • Assist his teachers where needs arise. Parents can read assignments such as geography or history and can provide educational trips for students.

  • Give genuine praise for jobs well done. Unearned praise can be damaging. Assume he wants to do well, assist where needs arise, then step aside and let him try for independence. Attention Deficit Disorder And Classroom - ADHD Child
